I'm an Edoro, this is my blog.
Mallory Ortberg, laying waste to fools on GAWKER, today, regarding CNN’s offensively lovey-dovey coverage of the two high school football stars who were convicted on Sunday of sexually assaulting a blacked-out drunk 16 year old girl from a neighboring town at a party, and then sharing pictures of her on the internet.
More details HERE.
I think it’s reasonable to say that, given the football culture of Steubenville, OH and the notorious difficulty of proving sexual assault even when the victim REMEMBERS WHAT HAPPENED, it is likely that what these jocks did to this other human would have become simply a dark part of Steubenville high school folklore, were it not for the digital trail of photos, tweets, and texts that the bystanders and assaulters themselves put out into the world.
SO THANK YOU, NERDS, FOR INVENTING SOCIAL MEDIA.
And thank you, Mallory and Manhattan snark-media for reminding some people—including CNN, apparently—what personal responsibility actually means.
That is all.
Pssst rape isn’t something you can trip and fall and do
You have to intentionally have sex with someone without their consent or against their explicit LACK of consent
You have to CHOOSE to have sex with someone who is drunk or high or otherwise incapacitated or who is telling you no, or who told you no until you whined until they said yes, or who is clearly uncomfortable with how things are going
Literally the only way I can possibly think of for someone to commit rape ””by accident”’ is if both people are so drunk/high they have no idea what they’re doing but GUESS WHAT YOU STILL COMMITTED RAPE.
It is a purposeful act. It’s done on purpose. People who do wrong things deserve to be punished. People who do wrong things ON PURPOSE while KNOWING THAT THEY’RE WRONG and BEING AWARE OF WHAT THEY’RE DOING AND THAT IT’S WRONG definitely deserve to be punished. Punishing them and treating them like people who intentionally did something fucking awful is not treating them as ‘lesser beings’, it’s holding them to the same standards we hold the rest of humanity to.
PS: A one-year sentence isn’t going to ruin a bunch of white star athletes’ lives.
PPS: If they commit rape then they deserve to be called rapists. For the rest of their lives. They shouldn’t ever be able to hide the fact that they’re rapists. Their victims can’t ever not be rape victims again, so why should they get the privilege of ever not being rapists again? Fair’s fucking fair. Being able to throw a fucking ball doesn’t mean you’re exempt from the rules of society.
My favorite thing about people whining that convicting young rapists ruins their lives is that no one seems to care about the victims whose lives THEY ruined.
What do THOSE people get?
Okay, long story short. I was raped and robbed a couple nights ago and my bank account was brought down to $0.00.
You, of course, don’t have to but I’ve set up a button on my blog for anyone who wishes to donate a little bit to my bank account. My parents are supporting me a little with gas money, but this will help mostly with me eating since I have to be on campus all day every day and I am only able to bring one meal’s worth of food to school or if I have an unexpected small expense.
One thing I will make sure y’all know if you don’t remember is that I am an alcoholic. I quit drinking and I am almost 48 hours sober, previously 5 days sober. Because me being raped and robbed was an unfortunate result of my drinking I am now 100% committed to quitting. However, it’d be unrealistic to say that I absolutely won’t relapse because it is VERY difficult to quit. To help, I am going to AA meetings and I stopped going to bars until I feel comfortable not drinking in such environments (I lost my ID anyway). So… if you were considering donating, know that there is a risk and I completely understand if you don’t trust me.
Also, I don’t get my first paycheck until 2/2/2012.
The button is in the top-left corner of my blog. Any amount is appreciated.
Thanks for the support everybody.
