Breaking J.K. Rowling News of the Day: News from the industry vine this morning is that J.K. Rowling has officially signed a book deal with Little, Brown, and will soon be releasing her highly anticipated Harry Potter follow up.
No word yet on title, plot, or publication date, but word is that the book’s target audience will be adults.
“Although I’ve enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series,” said the author in a press release.

The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry’s success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life.

[galleycat.]

Oh dear. I cannot help but be fearful. Because whatever it is, it CAN’T be as popular as Harry Potter, it just can’t, and if it isn’t then she’ll be sad. And so will I. I kind of feel like she should have just gone out on the blaze of glory that was book seven. Seven bestselling books plus various tie-ins, movies, etc, that’s enough for one lifetime, right?

NO, IT ISN’T :(
essie i love you but everything about this paragraph is really really distressing me!! why should someone have to be shackled forever to their first work? probably this new thing won’t be as popular as the harry potter series but it doesn’t follow that this new thing will therefore be less worthy. i think if i had written harry potter and someone told me after i couldn’t write or publish any more books because they wouldn’t be as good or popular as my first, i would punch that person, and then i would go and cry, and then i would go write a new book even if i hadn’t been planning on it, just out of spite and bloody-mindedness.

agreeing with pell here
like yes holy shit harry potter was an unprecedented success but a) why does that mean that she can’t ever write anything not related to harry potter b) why does everything else she does have to be as wildly successful as harry potter
i’m sure that whenever this comes up there will be critics left and right going hRRM HRRMM THIS IS GOOD BUT IT’S NO HARRY POTTER
harry potter wasnt just a book series it was a god damn cultural phenomenon and yeah that is pretty hard to follow up!
but that doesn’t mean she has to sit back and steeple her fingers and go WELP, GUESS I’M DONE BEING A WRITER NOW THAT I’M SO FAMOUS!!!!!

Yeah, like, the thing about being a writer is that…you love writing? Just because she’s famous and rich doesn’t mean she doesn’t have stories she wants to tell and it’s just kind of mean to say she shouldn’t because maybe they won’t be AS GOOD. Maybe they’ll be better, considering she’s had an entire series’ worth of practice.
